Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost per square foot to finish my basement or expand my living space?

This answer varies. Every project is unique in it's own way. The cost to finish or expand an area is based on the amenities and finishes you desire.

Are consultations free?

Yes. Consultation and preliminary estimates are free. We will make an appointment to discuss your project based on your design and budget. We will then present a proposal including specifications and a preliminary estimate.

Why is there a big price difference between companies?

Comparisons may not be "apples to apples."
If there is more than a 10%-15% price differential in bids, there may be a problem such as:

  • Specifications and features may be different.
  • The quality of materials may be different.
  • The quality of workmanship may be different.
  • Levels of supervision may be different.

"Competitive bids are just that!
If I shave the labor or materials
to get your job, is that the house
you really want? There are hundreds
of ways to lower the price of a building
which often lower the quality and
workmanship also."

*The Well Built House by James Locke, pg.23

How accurate is your proposal?

We guarantee our price for 15 days based on your final plans and specifications. Our proposals are very detailed so your price only changes when you make a change. All changes are approved in writing before the work is performed.

Who designs our project?

Using our computer design program, our staff is capable of transforming your ideas allowing your completed project to be seen before it even begins. This service allows you to make and view preliminary design changes on the spot. We also welcome the opportunity to work in conjunction with architects and other design professionals.

Do you finish everything or do we hire some contractors?

We take care of the entire project from the beginning to the end. We are a full service company.

How long have you been in business?

We have been in business since 1989.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We are licensed by the City of Lexington and carry Workman's Compensation, General Liability, and Builder's Risk Insurance.

What is your warranty?

We provide a written 1-year warranty on our work, including the worked performed by our subcontractors. Many of the products and materials we install come with their own manufacturer's warranty.

How long will it take to finish my project?

This depends on the size and magnitude of your project. You will be provided a tentative schedule before we start that will describe the activities and an estimated completion date.

"People forget how fast you did a job-but remember how well you did it."
                                                                   Author: Howard Newton

How soon can we start our project?

Within 2 to 3 weeks after the contract has been signed. This allows adequate time for permit applications, ordering materials, and for you to make selections such as carpet, fixtures, paint, cabinets, etc.

Can I make changes after the project is started?

Yes, but please remember changes result in a longer completion time and involve extra costs.

Will the job site be messy?

We cannot avoid the fact that a construction project will create a certain amount of dust, noise, and inconvenience. We will take measures to reduce these problems.

Who will be working in my home?

A combination of Pickett Homes employees and licensed and insured subcontractors who have been with us for an average of 10 years.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. You will need a permit if electrical and plumbing changes are involved. Pickett Homes will acquire all permits needed. Not obtaining a permit is in violation of city building codes.
